A Magical Foggy Engagement Session at Grayson Highland State Park

When Jessica first reached out about her engagement session at Grayson Highlands State Park, she expressed concern about the forecasted fog and drizzle. Would their photos still turn out beautiful without the sweeping mountain vistas the park is known for? As a Southwest Virginia engagement photographer who thrives on unique lighting conditions, I assured her that sometimes the most magical images come from unexpected weather.

A Love Story in the Mist
Jessica and Travis met through mutual friends and have built a beautiful relationship that has led to their year-long engagement. With plans to elope soon, they wanted to commemorate their journey with photos in a place that holds special meaning. As a frequent hiker at Grayson Highlands, Jessica has developed a deep connection to these mountains, making it the perfect backdrop for capturing their down-to-earth personalities and genuine connection.
The fog that rolled in on their mid-March session created something unexpected and intimate – a world where everything beyond them seemed to disappear. Rather than detracting from the experience, the mist transformed ordinary park features into ethereal backdrops that focused entirely on their love story.

Embracing the Elements
With the fog diffusing the natural sunlight, I adjusted our originally planned golden hour session to earlier in the day. This photographer's instinct paid off – had we waited until sunset, the combination of fading light and thick fog would have left us with too little illumination to work with. Understanding how different weather conditions affect lighting is crucial for creating gorgeous images regardless of circumstances.
Using my 24-70mm lens allowed me to capture both intimate close-ups of their connection and wider environmental shots that showcased the moody landscape. I believe it's essential to document not just the couple but also the location they've chosen – after all, Jessica and Travis selected Grayson Highlands for its significance in their relationship, and these images should transport them back to every detail of that day.

Creative Composition in the Fog
The misty conditions inspired unique compositional choices:
I used the weathered wooden fence lines as leading lines, having the couple lean against them while gazing into the distance, with the fog creating a sense of mystery
A massive tree in the background became a dramatic silhouette, emphasizing how secluded and intimate the space felt as Jessica and Travis walked hand-in-hand
Large rocks provided natural seating for Travis, creating layered compositions with Jessica standing beside him
The iconic wild ponies of Grayson Highlands made an appearance, allowing for those sought-after shots that capture the park's unique character (while maintaining a respectful distance, as touching, petting, or feeding the ponies is prohibited)
Throughout the session, I showed Jessica images on the back of my camera, watching her apprehension transform into excitement as she saw how the fog was creating a dreamlike quality in their photos. This transparency helped build trust and allowed them to fully embrace the conditions.

Styled for Success
For their outfits, I offered guidance while ensuring they felt authentically themselves. Jessica wore a flowing dress with a small print that created beautiful movement in the photos, while Travis opted for a solid shirt without logos – choices that kept the focus on their connection rather than their clothing.
Given the chilly, windy March weather typical at Grayson Highlands' elevation, we incorporated jackets between shooting locations. This practical approach is something I recommend for all couples visiting the park in cooler months – dress in layers that can be easily added or removed as we move between spots.

The Full Experience
Our session lasted about 1.5 hours, allowing us to explore various locations throughout the expansive park. Despite the weather conditions, we captured a diverse gallery of 87 images that showcased both their relationship and the ethereal beauty of Grayson Highlands in the fog.
Jessica later shared: "I was so worried about the weather ruining our photos, but you put me completely at ease. You were so easy to work with, and I absolutely love our engagement photos! I would recommend you to anyone looking for photos."
